Cathedral Saint Mary of Graces

Built in the period 1525-1553. Constructive system: walls of mud brick and flattened of earth talpuja, its roof cover was mud tile. Current area 1,186.78 m2.
Founded by the Spanish captain Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, with the original name of Nuestra Señora de La Piedad Church.
In 1534 it was elevated to the rank of cathedral of the province, by bull of his holiness Paul III, as; Cathedral Santa Maria de las Gracias, functioning from that moment as seat of the bishopric of Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
In archaeological investigations carried out in the main altar in 2001, the bones of the first three bishops of Nicaragua were found, as well as pre-Columbian burials.
