"The Fortress"

Colonial Structure No. 19

Built between 1524-1530.

Construction system: perimeter wall of large stones and building constructed with rammed earth.

Erected by orders of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, to monitor and protect the city from possible rebellions by the natives.

Its main tower was depicted by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo in 1532. In 1998, part of the fortress wall was uncovered due to landslides caused by the rains from Hurricane Mitch.
